What the NIDEK excimer laser does:
The NIDEK laser ablates (removes) parts of the cornea (front window of the eye) to give it a different shape. In photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) it removes parts of the surface of the cornea. In laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) it removes parts of the inside of the cornea.
Why this is useful:
The different shape of the cornea focuses light differently. If the new shape is more correct, vision will be better.
How it works:
The reason this works is that the cornea does some of the focusing of the eye, and removing specific parts of the cornea changes the focusing of the cornea. When the outside light is focused on the retina (film-like tissue in the back of the eye), the patient can see clearly. In myopia (near-sightedness), the light is focused by the cornea and lens in front of the retina, not on it.
